A small still life that holds an entire painter's revolution.
Apples and Pear (1893) — Roderic O'Conor
Roderic O'Conor painted this still life in 1893, the year he settled in Pont-Aven and began the bold experiments with colour and broken stroke that defined his career. Two apples and a pear arranged on a table become, in O'Conor's hands, a study in saturated reds, greens and golds laid down with the confident impasto he'd absorbed from Van Gogh and Gauguin. Small in scale, large in ambition.
