Beaulieu (1921) - Sir John Lavery

Beaulieu (1921) looks out over Beaulieu-sur-Mer on the French Riviera, its sea shimmering in turquoise and blue beneath warm southern light. Lavery painted it in early 1921, when he and his wife Hazel escaped London for the south of France and he worked through a series of coastal views and garden scenes.

Sir John Lavery (1856-1941), born in Belfast, was one of the most celebrated painters of his generation. He trained in Glasgow and Paris, made his name with society portraits and luminous outdoor scenes, served as an official artist during the First World War, and was knighted and elected to the Royal Academy. His paintings are held today in major public collections including the Ulster Museum, the National Gallery of Ireland and Tate.
